Call for Assistant Professor

The School of International Relations at FGV is seeking to appoint one full-time Assistant Professor from 1 September or as soon as possible thereafter.

Successful applicants will be expected to make a strong contribution to research, coordinate and teach undergraduate and graduate courses, supervise students, take an active role in building the School’s program and profile, and make a positive contribution to the professional development of the field of International Relations in Brazil. This position will be based at our São Paulo campus.

Subject specialization in any one of the following fields is desirable but not essential: International Relations Theory, International Political Economy, Comparative Politics, International/Global History.

The ideal candidate will hold a PhD by September 2018 (or be close to completion). S/He will be able to provide excellent class teaching to high-achieving students at both the undergraduate and graduate level in the field of International Relations. Essential criteria also include experience in carrying out independent research and a track record of publications in highly-ranked, peer-reviewed journals or major presses. For junior candidates who have not had time after their doctorate to publish in the top journals in the discipline, the selection committee expects a credible case that they are able to secure such publications in the near future. Competitive candidates will also have the willingness and the ability to commit to the full range of academic and administrative duties at the School.

While teaching and other activities at the School can be conducted in English, passive understanding of Portuguese is preferable and an active commitment to learning the language a plus.

Since 1944 FGV is a private, nonprofit center for learning focused on research and teaching excellence. In 2016 we were ranked a top-ten think-tank in the world, according to Global Go To Think Tanks by Pennsylvania University, due to the activities of our many thematic centers and institutes. Our undergraduate and graduate programs normally achieve top marks in all national rankings. The School of International Relations was officially launched in 2018, and our commitment is to ensure it honors FGV’s tradition of excellence.

FGV is an equal opportunities employer. Salary and benefits are competitive with peer institutions. Further enquiries can be addressed to FGV/RI’s coordinator, Professor Matias Spektor (matias.spektor@fgv.br).

Interested candidates should send a letter of intent, a curriculum vitae, and two research papers or thesis chapters to ri@fgv.br. The closing date for applications is August 3rd 2018.
